Umbrail Pass  2,505m Switzerland ★★★★★

Umbrail pass
Ridden...
2011, 2012, 2014

Description...
Heading along the S28 from Zernez, you come to the village of Santa Maria Val Mustair, a typical village of its type in this area. Along the Main Street there is an almost hidden turning on the right onto the via Umbrail, nothing particularly obvious to highlight the delights that await!  Initially a reasonably steep almost urban road with houses either side, this is the start of the Umbrail pass which climbs up to over 2500m.

Now super surfaced apart from minor exception lower down the valley, which gets smaller every year.  The extremely impressive road surface and super wide hairpins where the road has been engineered over the side of the mountain, and equally so where it's cut into the rock on the other end of each switchback.  A fantastic ride in every sense, one of our favourites.

It only has one elevation, that being from Santa Maria Val Mustair up to the Italian Border with Passo dello Stelvio.  It is the highest paved road in Switzerland.

We visited this part of the world in 2011, 2012 & 2014 on each occasion, looking for an easy route to the stop of Passo Dello Stelvio although Umbrail is an event in itself.  Part of the BBC Top Gear Davos to Stelvio best driving road in the world route, it doesn't disappoint.
