Bernina Pass 2,328m Switzerland ★★★★
Ridden...
2007, 2014
Description...
We first rode this pass in 2007 en route to Stelvio. Like the 2014 tour it was sandwiched between a whole series of other brilliant passes as is hard to remember that much about it. Unlike 2014 where we headed straight down to Tirano in 2007 we took a sharp left soon after the pass signs to Livigno.
Compared with the Julier Pass Bernina has shorter, sharper turns, still not switchback or hairpin territory though. It also has super long straights which are nice and fast. The scenery is spectacular with railway, lake and road all together. After the summit there is a shorter down pass; much steeper and more technical than the other side. This leads to the Swiss/Italy border at Tirano.
